Using Delicious to Increase Traffic and Search Engine Rankings

Search Engine RankingsDelicious is an online bookmarking site which doubles up as a social media site.  It is a great site to register with whether you have your own website or not and it has many great benefits as many webmasters soon find out after joining.  Today we are going to talk to you about the Delicious website, what benefits it has, how it can be used as part of an SEO strategy and how you can check how many of your links are already on the website.

The Benefits of Using Delicious

Whether you are a website owner or not the Delicious website is a great way to bookmark webpages.  Now, we know you can do this on your normal PC but the benefit of Delicious is your bookmarks are stored online so you can visit your bookmarks on your PC, on your phone, on your work computer or on any device that has access to the internet.  Once you have added a webpage to Delicious you can then tag it to help you find it easily at a later date.  For example if you were to add this article on Delicious you would probably tag it with “social media” or “SEO” and then be able to find it later by clicking on one of the above tags in your delicious bookmarks.

Every tag that a webpage is given is saved by Delicious and the website then uses these tags to index the webpages.  This is completely different to Google who uses an algorithm as on Delicious webpages are ranked based on the community’s feedback rather than title tags, URLs, keywords etc.  The more users that tag a page, the more weight the page is given and hence the more traffic that the page receives.  If you run a website or a blog you can use these results to find out what is popular in the Delicious community and then write your own blog posts accordingly.

Delicious and SEO

There is always a lot of debate when it comes to social media websites and how much weight they are given by Google and the other search engines.  Some people believe that sites like Delicious are given a lot of weight by the search engines due to the relevance of the search results whereas others believe no weight is given at all.  No matter which side of the fence you are on it is fair to say that Google does keep its eye on social bookmarking sites and we never know what may happen in the future.

What we do know for sure is that Delicious is a fantastic way to increase the amount of traffic that your website gets, especially if you have a popular post.  The key to this is writing engaging content that readers will bookmark and want to share with their friends.  The more popular a webpage becomes, the more links it will receive from other websites in time.  Backlinks are one of the best ways to increase your search engine ranking after all.

The Delicious Link Checker Tool

The Delicious site can also help you to find other websites in your niche and find out how they are doing on the social media site.  By using the Delicious Links Checker Tool you can find out how many links a competitor’s domain has as well as how many links your own has, and alter your SEO strategy accordingly.

If you are not using the Delicious bookmarking site you are already missing out.  Sign up today and see how it can help you increase your traffic and your online presence.  The Delicious Links Checker Tool can help you to track your progress along the way.

I have been hearing about delicious for a while but never made the plunge to actually see how it can benefit me. You’re right though, we don’t know what google will do in the future so it must be best practise to try and be visible on as many social bookmarking sites as possible.
