system administrators to be able to find contact information for other administrators via an IP address or domain name.\u00a0 When Whois first became standardised in the 1980s, only one organisation existed to handle all domain name registrations, and that was DARPA.\u00a0 This allowed whois to utilise one central server for all queries, which made retrieving information very easy.\u00a0 Since then, Whois has gone through a number of changes and the data in the Whois system now consists of a variety of different uses including the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Determining domain name registration status<\/li>\n<li>Use in law enforcement investigations regarding national and international laws<\/li>\n<li>Conducting trademark research and preventing intellectual property theft<\/li>\n<li>Identifying people and entities responsible for the content of various online services, such as e-commerce and other uses<\/li>\n<li>Fraud prevention<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Whois Software<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Originally, the applications used to gather Whois data were written for Unix systems and would be executed from a command line interface only.\u00a0 The Whois client and server software are both distributed under a free open-source license, and distributions are included in all Unix and Linux operating systems.\u00a0 Certain commercial Unix packages, such as Sun Solaris 7, may utilise a proprietary software implementation for it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Whois On The Web<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With the popularity and widespread usage of the World Wide Web, finding Whois information has become incredibly common place and easy for anyone to use.\u00a0 One such example of Whois on the Web is the <a href=\"http:\/\/pingler.com\/seo-tools\/domain-whois-retriever\/\" command line client that would display the Whois output on a webpage with little to no formatting.\u00a0 Today, Whois clients that are available on the web will format the search results for display and will directly perform the Whois inquiries themselves.\u00a0 These web-based applications are typically proprietary and most of them are authored by the domain registrars.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Whois Criticisms<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The downside to the Whois system is that there is no such thing as domain privacy.\u00a0 The contact details of anyone who registers a domain, such as addresses and telephone numbers are easily accessible to anyone.\u00a0 Many spammers have taken advantage of this in order to harvest email addresses by using whois requests.\u00a0 Due to this abuse of the Whois system, many servers and websites offering Whois services have implemented CAPTCHA systems to stop spammers.\u00a0 The Whois system was also not written with an international audience in mind, since it was developed for ARPANET originally, in the very early days of the Internet.\u00a0 The fact that Whois data is in US-ASCII format can limit the usability or usefulness of Whois in countries outside of the United States.<\/p>\n<p><i><html><br \/>\n\t<head><br \/>\n\t\t<title><\/title><br \/>\n\t<\/head><br \/>\n\t<body><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n\t\t\t<a
