\"Wordpress\"If you\u2019re thinking of starting a blog, chances are you\u2019ve considered using WordPress. \u00a0It\u2019s one of the most popular platforms these days and offers users countless design, navigation and content options so that you can make your site truly individual. \u00a0But getting started can be tricky: as with any new piece of software, WordPress takes some getting used to. \u00a0So read through our handy list of tips before you get started and hopefully we can offer you a helping hand through those difficult first few steps.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re assuming here that you\u2019ve already completed the installation. \u00a0WordPress is pretty famous for its straightforward installation process so we\u2019re hoping you haven\u2019t hit any brick walls yet!<\/p>\n

Getting Stuck In<\/strong><\/p>\n

What do you do first!? \u00a0Well can we suggest you take a little wander around your Dashboard? \u00a0This is the area in which your activity is tracked and alerts you to any comments or incoming links you have received.<\/p>\n

From the dashboard, you can also start a new blog post. \u00a0Click the \u2018Write a new post\u2019 button and you\u2019ll be presented with an input page. \u00a0The functions on this page are pretty simple and not dissimilar to other writing software you will have used in the past. \u00a0If you\u2019re a newbie, stick to underlining and changing fonts. \u00a0If you know a bit more, you can have fun with linking keywords in your text.<\/p>\n

Posts vs. Pages<\/strong><\/p>\n

Once you have written a new \u2018post\u2019, you might want to start adding \u2018pages. \u00a0What\u2019s the difference? \u00a0Well a post is simply a blog entry, whereas a page is more static. \u00a0You might wish to add an \u2018About me\u2019 or \u2018Contact\u2019 page to your WordPress site. \u00a0Feel free to experiment with pages; you can always delete anything you\u2019re unhappy with.<\/p>\n

Themes<\/strong><\/p>\n

The way your site looks to the average visitor will be determined within \u2018Themes\u2019. \u00a0This section allows you to select the \u2018Design\u2019 tab and change colours, layout and navigation options. \u00a0The options in the \u2018Themes\u2019 section of WordPress are famous for being extensive and there are tonnes of different looks you can go for. \u00a0When you find a theme you like, simply download, unzip and upload the theme to the correct directory provided by WordPress.<\/p>\n

Plugins<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is one of the main advantages of using a system like WordPress to power your blog, rather than attempting to build your own. \u00a0Other people spend a lot of time developing and adding new tools to WordPress that their peers can download and use on their own blogs. \u00a0You can use as many or as few as you like and gradually add new features to your blog over time.<\/p>\n

These plugins involve adding picture galleries, Twitter tools, backups, video display and much, much more. \u00a0WP-Cache is probably the most useful. \u00a0This plugin caches WordPress pages and stores them for future use, saving on download time. \u00a0This may well encourage new readers to start pouring in and you will soon reap the benefits. \u00a0Getting started on WordPress can be daunting but once you start, you won\u2019t be able to stop!<\/p>\n
