Protecting Your Investments from Hackers and Theft

Cryptocurrency has opened up an entirely new world of investment opportunities. Many people have invested in Bitcoin, Ethereum and other digital currencies, hoping to build something for the future. But there is one question that every crypto investor should be asking: How safe is my money, and what can I do to protect it from being stolen?

Unlike money held in a traditional bank account, cryptocurrency comes with some very particular risks. If someone gains access to your digital wallet and transfers your coins, recovering them can be extremely difficult, sometimes impossible. There is usually no bank to call, no straightforward way to reverse the transaction and no guarantee that you will ever see your money again.

This is why security should be just as important as choosing which cryptocurrencies to invest in.

1. Choose your trading platform carefully

One of the first decisions you need to make is where to buy and hold your cryptocurrency. There are numerous exchanges available, but they are not all equal when it comes to security, transparency and protecting customers.

Some of the better-established platforms worth investigating include:

Kraken: One of the longest-established cryptocurrency exchanges, operating since 2011. It offers security features such as two-factor authentication, withdrawal controls and regular proof-of-reserves reporting. It is particularly worth considering if security and transparency are priorities.

Coinbase: A well-known platform with a relatively straightforward interface, making it attractive to newcomers. It offers additional account protection through passkeys, security keys and other authentication methods.

Bitstamp: Another established exchange with a long operating history. It is worth considering for investors who prefer a more traditional exchange environment.

Personally, if I were choosing an exchange today, I would put Kraken and Coinbase near the top of my research list, with Kraken deserving particular attention for its security and reserve transparency.

However, there is something important to understand. Even the most reputable exchange cannot guarantee that your cryptocurrency will never be stolen or that your investment will always be accessible.

2. Consider keeping your cryptocurrency in a hardware wallet

This is perhaps one of the most important steps you can take if you hold a substantial amount of cryptocurrency.

A hardware wallet is a small physical device that stores your private keys offline, rather than leaving them exposed to an internet-connected exchange or computer.

Two established manufacturers worth researching are Ledger and Trezor.

The advantage is relatively straightforward. Even if someone manages to compromise your computer or online accounts, they cannot simply access the private keys stored securely on your hardware wallet.

Of course, this does not make you completely immune to theft. You still need to protect your recovery phrase and make sure you understand how the device works.

For anyone intending to hold cryptocurrency for years rather than actively trade every day, I believe a hardware wallet deserves serious consideration.

3. Never share your recovery phrase

If there is one golden rule in cryptocurrency security, this is it.

When you set up a digital wallet, you are normally given a recovery phrase consisting of a series of words. This phrase is effectively the master key to your wallet.

Anyone who obtains it may be able to take control of your cryptocurrency, even without having your physical device.

Never share it with anyone. Do not photograph it, store it in your email, upload it to cloud storage or send it through WhatsApp.

Keep it written down and stored securely in a private location. Consider having a carefully protected backup in a separate secure location.

And remember, no legitimate exchange or wallet support representative should ever ask you to disclose your recovery phrase.

4. Activate two-factor authentication

A strong password is important, but it should not be your only line of defence.

Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on every cryptocurrency account you use. This provides an additional security check when someone attempts to access your account.

Where possible, use an authenticator application or a physical security key rather than relying solely on text messages.

Also, use a different, strong password for every platform. A password manager can help you create and manage passwords without having to remember them all.

5. Be extremely careful with emails, messages and links

Not every cryptocurrency theft involves sophisticated hacking.

In fact, many people lose money because they are tricked into handing over access to their accounts.

You might receive an email claiming that your exchange account has been compromised, a message offering assistance with a withdrawal problem, or a notification asking you to verify your wallet.

Some of these messages look remarkably convincing.

Never click on suspicious links. Instead, open the official exchange website yourself or use its verified application.

Be particularly suspicious of anyone contacting you unexpectedly and offering to recover lost cryptocurrency. Unfortunately, recovery scams often target people who have already lost money.

6. Do not keep all your investments on one exchange

There is a temptation to leave everything in one place because it is convenient. However, convenience should not come at the expense of security.

If an exchange experiences a cyberattack, financial difficulties or operational problems, customers may find themselves unable to access their assets.

For longer-term investments, consider keeping only the cryptocurrency you need for trading on an exchange and storing the remainder in a properly secured personal wallet.

This approach reduces your dependence on a single platform.

So, which is the safest platform?

There is no honest way of guaranteeing that one cryptocurrency exchange is completely safe. Every platform carries some degree of risk, and even reputable companies can experience security incidents.

For UK investors, I would currently put Kraken and Coinbase among the established exchanges worth serious consideration.

Kraken stands out for its security controls and proof-of-reserves reporting, while Coinbase offers an accessible platform with a range of account security features.

However, I would make an important distinction between an exchange and a wallet.

An exchange is primarily somewhere to buy, sell and trade cryptocurrency. A hardware wallet is designed to give you greater control over the private keys protecting your investments.

For substantial long-term holdings, I would seriously consider using a reputable hardware wallet rather than leaving everything on an exchange.

One further point for UK investors: FCA registration for cryptoasset businesses is not the same as full FCA authorisation for all financial services. Cryptocurrency investments are generally not protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS), so you should never assume that your money is protected in the same way as ordinary bank deposits.

Final thoughts

I have always believed that protecting an investment is just as important as making it in the first place.

We spend considerable time researching which cryptocurrency might increase in value, but sometimes very little time considering what would happen if our accounts were compromised or our digital assets disappeared overnight.

A little preparation can make an enormous difference.

Use a reputable exchange, secure your accounts properly, consider a hardware wallet, protect your recovery phrase and never trust unsolicited messages offering help with your investments.

Most importantly, remember that in the world of cryptocurrency, you are often responsible for your own security.

Don’t wait until something goes wrong before taking the necessary precautions. By then, it may already be too late.

Disclaimer: This article is for general information and educational purposes only. It is not financial or investment advice. Cryptocurrency is a high-risk asset, and investors should carry out their own research before choosing an exchange, wallet or investment.

Cryptocurrency has opened up an entirely new world of investment opportunities.
